When I started this blog I thought it was going to be a simple project. I’ve read far too many blogs by authors or others in which each post starts with, “I know it’s been a while but…” or “I don’t post as much as I should…” and I was sure that wasn’t going to be me.
But oh, how we think we understand the world until we step into it.
It’s not that I haven’t thought about posting, it’s that I’ve had a hard time convincing myself to do it. I’ve been working at an increased pace on Penumbra and when it came down to it, it seemed that my time was better spent working on my manuscript than writing up a blog post.
My time working for the small publishing company I’m working at has taught me that having a social media presence is important for aspiring authors. It may not matter for finding an agent necessarily, but a publisher is certainly going to take you more seriously if you’ve got 1,000 followers on Facebook or Twitter than they will if its just your mom.
But the problem I’ve had in conjunction to that, is you have to supplement those followers with content. I can have a great social media presence and an active blog, but if I don’t have anything for people to read… what good is any of it?
That said, I do need to return to my intention of posting regularly. My original plan was once a week, but that seems like overkill at least for the moment. I think I’m going to shoot for every other Sunday starting now. After all the whole point of the blog was to record my thoughts and experiences and hopefully end up with a log of an author that goes from no name to published. That’s the dream anyway.
I’m on the second rewrite of Penumbra. I’m almost through the first act and making great progress. My goal is to have the full, second rewrite out to readers in the next two months. Then have the full manuscript out to agents by the end of the year. I’m on track to do that, it’s just going to take the time.
Time… a good idea for the next blog post, I’ll have to keep it in mind.
